[EzineArticles] Keywords Have Evolved: Now Is Your Opportunity to Shine With the Long Tail

Keywords Have Evolved:
Now Is Your Opportunity
To Shine With the Long Tail
EzineArticles.com Logo

Quality Content Still Reigns

It's over! The preoccupation with understanding and using keywords is no longer a battle for new and experienced content creators and Expert Authors.

What's changed?

Article writing and content creation for online users has undergone a major shift from the early days of keyword discovery and later aggressive keyword regulation. Many of us have collectively breathed a sigh of relief as the emphasis is back on quality content over keyword-riddled junk because search engines have improved their ability to connect a user's conversational long-tail queries with quality and original content.

What does this mean for you?

You have an opportunity to shine.

Before we get into the "how to," let's take a quick step back in keyword history.

A (Tongue-in-Cheek) Brief History of Keyword Usage

Many content creators have wisely (and not so wisely) used keyword practices as a part of their content marketing strategy over the years. What began with good intentions to increase their ability to be searched by their target audiences soon became a hotbed of questionable black hat SEO tactics as content creators (knowingly and unknowingly) allowed themselves to be drawn in by poor "quick 'n easy" promises. Let's take a closer look:

  • Keywords Discovered: "Hey, these keywords are neat and helped me show up on page one. I think I will use more of them."
  • Keyword Clouds: "I'll place a widget 'cloud' of words on my page to help search engines understand what my page is all about. Look! I can even make the words spin and interact with users!"
  • Keyword Glut: "I NEED MORE KEYWORDS! I'll just stuff them here, there, everywhere and then I will rule the search - mwhahahahaha!"
  • Keywords Spun: "Quantity is so much better than quality! I'll write dozens of articles covering the same topic and alter the text ever so slightly. It's not exactly identical, but it targets the same keywords at least."
  • Keywords Regulated: "STOP! This is the keyword police. Your content is under arrest. You are allowed one keyword or keyword phrase for every one hundred words. Failure to comply will result in suspension and de-indexing."
  • Keywords Evolved.

How Users, Publishers, and Search Engines Were Affected

Internet users hated the early days of keyword glut and spinning.

Search became a game of keyword roulette because poor quality would often outrank quality content, but what else could they do? Not use the Internet was out of the question, so they either accepted it as the way things were or they experimented with different search engines and social media.

Publishers disliked it too.

Targeting keywords over providing a good user experience and informative content cheapened the quality and value of the publisher's platforms. As a result, publishers attempted to fend off spam by establishing keyword checkpoints that blocked poor quality content and rewarded good quality content. Unfortunately, this made it more difficult for Expert Authors to publish.

Search engines were in hot water.

Internet users "putting up" with poor quality content wasn't acceptable, nor was allowing derivative, spun content driven by popular keywords to game the system. Search engines strived to provide a great user experience and found a way by improving semantic search and rewarding quality content. Their innovation has led to the evolution of keywords.

Current Affairs and the Long Tail

While keywords continue to have their place, the landscape has changed. Through the use of smarter synonym tools as well as the fine-tuning of co-occurrence contextual recognition tools, search engines are now more in tune with the needs of users and are better at understanding the relationships between indexed content, keywords, and user search queries.

For Expert Authors like yourself, this means you have the opportunity for your existing and future quality content to do well. This is especially true if you have strong brand, link, social, and user signals as well as target long-tail user queries, which are ranking higher than ever before because they emulate the practices of natural, conversational speech used by your audience.

The long tail depicts the frequency with which a topic occurs and its demand. Let's take a closer look.

There are three main parts of the long-tail concept: the head, the middle, and the tail.

  • Head: At the top of the curve, the Head targets a large audience with a high content saturation, demand, and competition (e.g., "Weight Loss").
  • Middle: Connecting the head and the tail, the Middle moderately targets an audience with an average content saturation, demand, and competition (e.g., "Weight Loss for Women" and "Weight Loss for Women Over 40").
  • Tail: The Tail targets a highly focused audience with content that's in low supply, demand, and competition (e.g., "Weight Loss for Women Over 40: Top 7 Quick, Easy, and Painless Tips to Drop a Dress Size or More!)".

By targeting your audience and creating content along the long tail, you will increase the likelihood of your articles being seen by readers.

Don't Dump the Overall Concept of Keywords Entirely

Of course, you shouldn't throw out good keyword strategies such as integrating great keywords into your titles naturally and writing articles contextually relevant to search queries based on user demand. Find balance. Provide rich, informative content that focuses on the reader both on and off your website. Create strong social signals by engaging with your audience on social media (via discussions, sharing, etc.). And finally, implement good keyword strategies that help (not hinder) your success.

Go on! Take this opportunity to shine by brainstorming long-tail article titles, allow your experience to come forth, and let the keywords take a break. Refocus on writing creative, engaging, informative content that really connects with readers.

Bruce Kaler M.D. "... establish your voice and brand ..."

The marketing principle of giving away of something of value for free in order to sell something else, resonated with me. It is also a way to establish your voice and brand in a more structured professional manner than typical social media i.e. Facebook, Twitter, et al. They have their place and are useful to an author/writer. However, the growth of the internet creates a huge demand for quality content. I still think the key is to write "quality content". If it is well written, accessible, and of timely interest to people it will get plenty of attention. EzineArticles is a wonderful reservoir of good content on many topics.

Cherries are a proven anti-inflammatory, as well as reducing your uric acid level. Cherries have been scientifically shown to help with things like arthritis and gout, and may have some usefulness for general muscle soreness. One study involving a group of long distance runners found that tart cherry juice significantly reduced post-exertion pain.

-------------------------------------------------------------
*** Article of the Week: Truly Healthy Shopping and Cooking - For Those Who Don't Care to Do Either! - By Diane Lauer ***
-------------------------------------------------------------

For some of you, I'm sure this is true: when you read blogs and cookbooks written by culinary health gurus about how to prepare healthy, it can be a bit intimidating and overwhelming.  And perhaps it's also true that spending time in the grocery store is not your favorite pastime, either.

Maybe so, but the fact is, you've got to shop and cook in order to eat well.  Although shopping and cooking are admittedly not as easy as zipping through the drive through and unwrapping a hamburger, doing these things does not have to be a chore.  It can easily become part of a pleasant routine that will add years to your life and life to your years!

STEP ONE - THE GROCERY STORE

A routine can make all the difference.   If you want to get in and out of the grocery store in as little time as possible - pushing a cart loaded with nutrients and short on calories - here is a basic game plan:

  • If they have the option, get a smaller cart. Really, you won't be buying as much food as before, and since lots of it will be fresh, you'll need to do it a little more often. The smaller cart will signal when you've likely bought enough.
  • Shop mostly around the perimeter of the store. The processed, bad-for-you foods are generally in the aisles - with a few exceptions.
  • Learn where the beans and whole grains are (oatmeal, whole grain rice, quinoa, millet, etc.), as well as any raw nuts, seeds, nut butters or all natural jams you might want to stock up on. You might prefer the convenience of a jar of all natural salsa, bean dip, or hummus. Strategically plan your visits to the sections where you can load up on natural sweeteners like maple syrup and stevia extracts, herbal teas and spices. Other than those items, you don't need to hit the aisles.
  • Start in produce.  If possible, try to get to the farmer's market as often as you can to stock up on local produce. But if that's not an option for you, start your shopping trip in the produce section, and focus on colors and deals.  Colors are indicative of various nutrients, and the more colors in your basket, the more variety of essential nutrients you'll put in your body. Make sure your basket is at least halfway full with produce, leaving the other half for everything else. This ensures that your diet is rich in nutrients.  (But if you can, get to the farmer's market. You'll save money, and it's a genuinely pleasant experience to spend time with the people who grow your food.)
  • If you want bread, get it from the bakery department, NOT in the aisle. Make sure it's a genuine whole grain loaf - you can usually find several varieties baked fresh right there in the store.
  • If you buy animal products, look for free range poultry and eggs, and lean cuts of grass-fed beef. Stay far away from processed and cured meats, such as bacon, sausage, and ham.
  • Lots of people find that skipping dairy products altogether leads to amazing improvements in their health, and there are plenty of alternatives out there that might surprise you. Unsweetened almond milk is a great choice if you tolerate nuts; others prefer coconut milk or soy milk.  If you do opt for dairy products, try to get whole food versions, and even raw milk based products where available, with as few additives as possible.
  • The frozen food section is one aisle you can shop, and it's your friend! Stock up on vegetables and fruits here for times when you might be short of the fresh variety. Frozen fruits and vegetables are just as healthy as the fresh kind - and in some cases, even have their nutrients better preserved. Other finds in this section would be the live sprouted grain breads, such as Ezekiel and Food for Life.

STEP TWO - THE KITCHEN

Again, no one way of eating works for everyone. But if you don't like to cook, it makes sense to put some of your meals on autopilot, with as little "cooking" as possible.  Here are a few suggestions:

  • Breakfast: One large green smoothie (made with six cups of leafy greens, three bananas, and a 16 oz bag of frozen berries), one slice of Ezekiel raisin toast with a dab of clarified butter, one cup of chai tea with almond milk and sweetened with Stevia extract. Alternate: You can replace the Ezekiel bread with whole grain oatmeal, sweetened with a little maple syrup and sprinkled with cinnamon, or a bowl of Ezekiel cereal with almond milk, topped with blueberries.
  • Lunch: One large green smoothie, all natural peanut or almond butter and jelly on Ezekiel bread. Alternate: Replace the sandwich with some carrots, celery, and falafel chips, served with hummus, or a handful of raw nuts mixed with raisins and dates.
  • Dinner: One large green smoothie, one large salad, and one of seven meals you can rotate throughout the week, such as a vegetarian bean chili or potato leek soup (a crockpot is a best friend to someone who doesn't much like to cook!), a black bean and salsa tortilla wrap, roasted eggplant, zucchini and squash, or a mushroom, onion, and bell pepper omelet with roasted red potatoes.  Meals like these call for simple chopping, baking, or stewing, and are easy to put together in 15 minutes or fewer.
  • Dessert: Yes, you can have dessert! Have a little dark chocolate infused with almonds and orange, a maple syrup sweetened cinnamon rice pudding, a frozen banana based mango ice cream, or avocado chocolate mousse.  It's not hard to find very simple recipes for these treats on the internet, and since there are so few ingredients, you're doing your body good!
Find the simple but tasty meals that work with your routine, put as much on autopilot as you can, and you'll be amazed by what food can do for you.

[EzineArticles] Overwhelmed? Break BIG Goals Into Manageable Chunks

Overwhelmed? Break BIG Goals
Into Manageable Chunks
EzineArticles.com Logo

Become a Goal Achiever

"Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off the goal." - Henry Ford

Are you feeling overwhelmed? Does it seem like there are constant obstacles in your path? Do you imagine some maniacal being is sabotaging you by thwarting your progress?

An Expert Author recently expressed this same frustration, stating it's easy to make goals, visualize yourself meeting them, but actually doing it during the daily grind is another story.

I'm going to share with you what I shared with her: Whether your goal is to write a 50,000 word novel for NaNoWriMo or publish 30 articles by the end of the month, you can set actionable steps to feasibly achieve your goals by chunking.

What Is Chunking?

Chunking is the process of dividing something into smaller chunks. You can chunk down to create actionable steps and chunk up to prioritize your efforts.

Think of it like you're looking at a forest:

  • Chunk Down: See the forest (goal) for the trees (details). Consider the elements and details that make the goal whole.
  • Chunk Up: See the forest (goal) as a whole. Avoid getting so wrapped up in the details that you lose sight of the big picture.

How Do You Do It?

Chunking down is best done with a map as a guide. Here's how to make your map:

  • Once you've established your goal, write it down.
  • Chunk down by writing all of the steps and elements you need to take to get there.
  • Draw arrows indicating the order of events between the steps.

For example, let's say I want to publish 30 articles by the end of the month. Here's what my map (in part) may look like:

Once you have a map detailing the chain of events needed to achieve your goal, move forward by planning a timetable.

When Do You Do It?

Once you've established a road map, chunk your time by creating a timetable. Of course, be realistic with the timetable, but be okay with a challenge. Push the limit!

For example, I know I take approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to draft an article of 700-1,000 words. This estimate may be less with zero distractions, but I'm never 100% distraction free so I'm giving myself a little wiggle room. I usually will take an additional 30 minutes to revise, edit, proofread, and perform final edits. To submit and publish, I will allot at least 5 minutes to ensure all of the information in the Write & Edit submission form of my account is correct. I'll also take 10 minutes to prepare a few social media posts to be ready to promote the article once it's live. From start to finish, I clock 2 hours and 15 minutes for one article.

To write 30 articles (to meet my goal), I will need to allot 67 hours and 30 minutes for the duration of one month. Since I have various non-writing duties and priorities (as well as a few holidays this month), I need to chunk out my writing schedule to accommodate my writing goal accordingly.

First, I've estimated the duration of my daily writing sessions to determine how much time each day I will be dedicating to writing:

  • 1 article = 2 hours and 15 minutes
  • 2 articles = 4 hours and 30 minutes
  • 3 articles = 6 hours and 45 minutes

Next, I'll create a timetable to stay on the ball. I'll also share this with my team, family, and friends to secure their support.

Based on this timetable, I'll have written 30 articles by day 25 with planned catch-up days (in case my writing sessions are interrupted and I go over the time I allot myself) as well as breaks to refresh and celebrate holidays with my family.

The next step: Do it!

It's never too late to get on track with your goals. When you break goals into doable chunks, it's much easier and more motivating to achieve them. Set a goal, apply the chunking method, embrace it by taking action, and don't take your eyes off the goal!

What method do you use to achieve your goals? Click here to let us know - we'd love to hear from you!

Colonoscopy Crisis: Why are these doctors canceling them?

Dear thomas,

This video is not for the faint of heart.

These recently discovered details are gruesome...but they change everything we know about colonoscopies.

And many doctors will not reveal this information to their patients. Why? Because they can't stand to part with the $7,000 (or more) price tags.

Just watch one minute of this presentation and you'll understand--canceling your next colonoscopy could be the best decision you've ever made for your health.

When you're ready--visit here.

P.S. If you're 50, and especially if you're over 65--you must watch this presentation. This new information regarding colonoscopies could save your life.
