The #1 Skill You're Missing For A Happier Life

Andy Weir once said, 

A story in your head isn't a story. It's just a daydream until you actually write it down. So write it down.
I spent more than sixteen years going from someone who has a vague story of his life in his head, to someone who is actually materializing it. I learned A LOT in those sixteen years, and yes, I got much better in this craft of materializing the story of life. But I also learned that a few things along the way that if I had known them on day one I probably would've become more skillful a lot faster. 

Today I want to share one of them with you.

Since I appreciate personal development and Kaizen, I developed a simple but powerful habit that helps to identify the root cause of a problem. It is the technique of 5 WHYs which was originally developed in Toyota. 

Every day we face different problems. However, problems are just symptoms of deeper issues. Fixing a problem quickly may be a convenient solution, however, it doesn't protect you from recurring mistakes and failures. This is why it is necessary to focus on finding the root cause and tackle it properly.

When applying the 5 Whys technique, you want to get to the problem's essence by asking why five times and then fix it. By repeating why five times, the nature of the problem as well as its solution can become clear. Actually, the 5 Whys may show you that the source of the problem is quite unexpected.


So when I stumbled upon that music video I mentioned yesterday I was really curious to figure out the root cause for the problem of our dissatisfaction with our lives. And this was what I figured out: 

The problem I wanted to solve sounded like 
we feel dissatisfaction in life.

(1st) why? We are not happy with our lives. 
(2nd) why? - We either weren't able to achieve our goals OR we were disappointed with our goals when we actually achieved them OR achieved too few of our goals. 
(3rd) why?- we either set the WRONG goals OR were INEFFICIENT or INCONSISTENT in achieving them.
(4th) why? - we never trained well enough ... THE SKILL (!) of achieving the right goals, efficiently and consistently. 
(5th) why? we never realized it was a skill.

I was shocked by how simple the truth was. Because, I realized that the root cause for arguably every kind of dissatisfaction with our lives, including mine, was that we lack the skill of achieving our goals.

  • To be more specific, we lack 
    the skill of achieving the RIGHT goals, EFFICIENTLY, and CONSISTENTLY.

And this is what I call The #1 skill in the world. The true super-power that can really be obtained by anyone in this life. Because once developed this skill becomes sort of your own magic wand. Just imagine yourself for a moment achieving any goals you crave in this life. How about achieving that white-whale goal, we were talking about yesterday, the one you've always dreamed of being able to achieve one day, but shied away from? 

But how does one develop the skill of achieving the right goals, efficiently, and consistently? This is what we will talk about tomorrow.

For now, just let yourself imagine in detail how you achieved your white-whale goal.
