Yesterday I shared with you the importance delivering value to people is when building a business.
Today I want to share my childhood hero and how he prepared me to achieve massive success.
I will tell you about the dog later ;)
When I was a kid I always idolized Sylvester Stallone because he represented a strong and tough man to me.
I really wished I could be able to become like him one day.
We all need role models right?
He was in movies including Rocky, Rambo and he was like a true spartan.
What is most impressive for me about Sylvester is how he got started.
He attended a school in suburban Philadelphia where he first got into acting.
He spent over two years instructing at the American college of Switzerland in Geneva.
When he got back to the USA he attended the University of Miami where he began to write.
He dropped out of collage and moved to New York to pursue his dreams of acting as a career.
He auditioned for every casting agent in town with zero success.
He decided it would be best to focus his efforts on writing while he worked on his acting ability.
In 1974 he landed a role as one of the leads in "The Lords of Flatbush".
He continued to audition for better parts but kept being rejected every single time!
Stallone started to run out of money and could barely afford to feed his family.
He had a habit of walking through the streets of New York and he would stop by the library to get warm during the winter months.
During his daily trips he started reading books by Edgar Allan Poe and Tolstoy.
This was essential for Sylvester since they inspired him to keep writing scripts for movies.
Deep down inside he really wanted to be an actor and he refused to settle for anything less.
One night he watched a fight between the great Muhammad Ali and Wepner.
Wepner was getting demolished by Ali but he kept getting up and fused to quit even tough everyone thought he didn't stand a chance.
This inspired Stallone to write the character of "Rocky".
He spent the next day writing the entire script for the movie.
He set out immediately after finishing it to sell the script to producers and got shot down one after another.
He continued this pattern for months.
By this time he was so poor that he had to sell his wife's jewelry and when he hit rock bottom he made the decision to sell his best friend.
He stood outside a liquor store until someone agreed to buy his dog for $50.
He continued pitching his story to more producers with the hope of getting one to buy it.
Eventually he managed to find one who loved the story line and offered him $100k for the script.
He told them that he wanted to play Rocky.
They declined and told him he was a writer not an actor.
Stallone refused the offer even though he was desperate for the money.
The producer called back a few weeks later with a bigger offer and Stallone declined because they didn't agree to let him play Rocky.
They countered with a $400k offer and he declined again because he insisted on playing the role of Rocky.
Eventually they gave in and offered him $25k to play to role.
He accepted.
The first thing he did after this was go back to the liquor store to buy back his dog.
He offered the man $150 for the dog but he declined!
Stallon kept raising the offer but the new owner kept declining.
He wasn't going to accept "NO" for an answer.
They eventually agreed on $15k and a role in the movie Rocky.
You can see the man and the dog in the movie.
The rest is history.
In 1976 the movie Rocky won the Academy Award for best picture.
During the awards ceremony he read all of the rejection slips from people who said the movie was predictable and no one would want to watch it.
But what the heck does all of this have to do with you?
We are now in the last 100 days of 2015.
You are going to be presented with lots of new business opportunities, you will face obstacles in your personal life and times of adversity that show what you are made of.
This is a requirement of all over achievers.
There will be days where you will be working and making progress easily while there will be other days where you will be working super hard but feel like you are not making progress.
But...
No matter what struggles and problems you're faced with you will need to continue working towards your dreams.
Just like Stallone, you will get rejected, laughed at and even mocked.
There will be days where you will just want to quit and give up.
Now at this point you are probably thinking Esteban this Stallone guy is great and all and I understand that I must work through the struggles but... what is your point?
My point is you must create a Big Vision for your success.
I shared my story with you three days ago to show you that I was like Stallone and every single person that is successful went through the same process that you are going through right now.
You will have self doubts, there will be people laughing at you and many times things won't go as planned.
Today I'm teaching you the power of creating a VISION for your success.
Some people may read this and think it's just B.S.
This is pure high level training that took me years to learn.
I was so busy trying to find the magical program that was going to make me rich that I missed what I just mentioned to you for years.
You see, I used to think that anyone could create success if they had a big why.
My why is:
- My freedom
- My parents
- My future kids
- And even my dog :)
But this only carried me to a certain point...
I was missing a big piece of the puzzle I wish I learned before I got started.
I had no VISION for my success.
I would take any road that would take me to the promised riches.
I bought countless products and tried so many different business models that didn't align with why I got into business in the first place.
Stallone had a strong vision for his success.
He didn't quit when he got rejected hundreds of times. (literally)
In fact he got rejected by the same people more than 2 times!
Crazy huh?
But he kept going because he had a vision for his success, he wasn't just pursuing the money.
He knew exactly what he wanted and he wasn't going to let anyone stop him from getting it.
You can have the strongest "why" in the world that if you don't have a vision you will lose focus and get stuck.
So today I want you to think about this:
- Why are you in business?
- Where do you want to be six months from now?
- How much money do you want to make per month?
What is your ideal business that would get you out of bed early in the morning?
When you are able to answer this questions you will be able to dominate whatever it is you decide to do.
So if you want to create a profitable business the first step is to define the vision for your success.
If you don't know where you are going any road will take you there ;)
Hope this helped you and your business.
Esteban G
P.S. I think Stallone is awesome, but I would never sell my dog for anything in the world :)
