Knowing where and how to use keywords can help you focus your article topic as well as increase your searchability, but understanding keyword usage can be tricky.

Keyword usage is a little like cholesterol. Good cholesterol will help ensure your health and quality of life, whereas too much bad cholesterol will build up and wreak all kinds of havoc on your health. Good keyword usage will help increase your exposure, whereas excessive keyword usage will build up and wreak all kinds of havoc on your credibility and potentially lower your ability to be seen.

It's all about finding balance: a healthy article diet of original, informative content, knowing which bad keyword practices will wreak havoc, and integrating good keyword strategies into your efforts.

Let's say you're a cardiologist who wants to educate readers on cholesterol and heart disease prevention. You do a little keyword research and find the phrase "what is cholesterol" has an incredible search rate, but fairly moderate competition. Instead of jamming the phrase in the middle of the sentence and bolding it, why not consider the following strategies that are more worthy of your credibility?

  • Smart Keyword Placement: When used smartly, your keywords should not stand out in your article. A smart method is to integrate your keywords in the beginning of your article's title and even incorporate the keywords into relevant sub-headers that organize your articles.
     
  • Smart Keyword Moderation: Like bad cholesterol, it's okay to use keywords in small doses. Eating a fried doughnut on occasion isn't going to throw your bad cholesterol off the charts, but eating too many doughnuts can cause ill effects. Limit your keyword usage to 1 keyword for every 100 words. So a 400 word article might have a keyword naturally integrated every 100 words.
     
  • Smart Keyword Integration: While writing, you will unconsciously provide natural keywords. Search engines are getting faster and smarter about separating the wheat from the chaff (i.e., the quality content from the worthless) and they reward quality, informative content with natural keyword integration.

Here is an example of unhealthy keyword placement, moderation, and integration:

Besides quoting another person or organization, quotation marks can imply more than meets the eye.

Notice the difference between the following two menu items:

Today's special: Chicken

Today's special: "Chicken"

The former implies what we all know as chicken; however, the latter implies it could be anything. Perhaps it's skunk that's been stewing in chicken stock or it could be so good, it's hard to believe it's actually chicken.

Don't leave your audience guessing! Always deliver a clear message to your readers. Try out these quotation mark tips to maintain your credibility.

Use quotation marks for direct quotations and dialogue.

"Today's special is chicken," said Toucan. "Get it while it's fresh!"

"You fail only if you stop writing." - Ray Bradbury.

Thomas Jefferson said, "Be polite to all, but intimate with few."

Quotation marks can be used to indicate irony or skepticism, but should not be overused.*

"It's okay, you can 'attack' me," said Lynn.

"What's with the quotation fingers?" Bob Wilton asked. "It's like saying I'm only capable of ironic attacking or something."

*Quotation marks are not needed after the words or phrases so-called, known as, and called.

This so-called chicken ... Is it really a chicken or is it a skunk in disguise?

When quoting lines of text that are indented (generally used when quotations are 100 words or more), then quotation marks are not needed.*

    In his commencement address to the MIT class of '97, Kurt Vonnegut offered this advice:

    Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees. You'll miss them when they're gone.

    Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll divorce at 40, maybe you'll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary. Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. Your choices are half chance. So are everybody else's.

    Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it or of what other people think of it. It's the greatest instrument you'll ever own...

*For non-indented quotations that run over multiple paragraphs (and it's not dialogue), don't add a quotation mark at the end of the paragraph unless it's the last sentence of the quotation.

When a quote is introduced indirectly, then quotation marks are not needed.

Oscar Wilde declared that a gentleman is one who never hurts anyone's feelings unintentionally.

When familiar phrases of literary origin, colloquial phrases, proverbs, etc., are used, then there is no need for quotation marks.

Growing up in the heart of New York City had its highs and lows. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

Slow down, Jerry! Haste makes waste.

The question mark (?), the exclamation mark (!), and the dash (-) go inside the quotation mark when they belong to the quotation. Otherwise they occur outside the quote.

Didn't Marie Antoinette say, "Let them eat cake"?

Many historians assert that Marie Antoinette never exclaimed, "Let them eat cake!"

It may not seem correct at times, but the comma always belongs inside quotations marks.

Who doesn't love Shel Silverstein's poems "Danny O'Dare," "Bear In There," and "Where the Sidewalk Ends"?

Use quotation marks on titles of short stories, poems, essays, articles, television shows, radio programs, and songs.

After reading Kate Chopin's "The Awakening," I began "The Storm."

In the days leading up to Facebook's historic (and now infamous) IPO, CEO Mark Zuckerburg pursued Warren Buffet's sage advice. The young CEO, who's gone from creating Facebook in his Harvard dorm-room to billionaire in only 8 years, spoke "for hours" with Buffett about how to take the social network public.

And it's no surprise. As one of the wealthiest people in the world, Buffett is also known for his incredible business acumen and strong philosophies around business, economics, and investing.
What makes him different however, is that most of these philosophies go "against the grain" and collective wisdom of the financial markets.

Here are three of his investing lessons that will help you learn from the master.

1. Invest in Productive, Cash-Generating Businesses

Contrary to most financial managers, Buffett doesn't recommend investing in currency-backed assets or gold. Especially as a way to hedge inflation.

Instead, he favors productive assets like businesses, farms and real estate. His rationale is that these supposed "safe" investments are actually the riskiest.

The main reason is that these assets actually lose purchasing power over time, while sound productive assets should grow - despite market cycles.

And Buffett has said that the goal for his companies isn't to simply "make money".

The goal is to generate more money then you will have to pay in taxes and inflation, so that you can buy more things later than you can with the same money right now.

2. Invest in Businesses, Not Markets

Warren Buffett isn't one of the richest people in the world because he buys stocks. He's so successful because he invests in businesses.

His investing philosophy is that you should favor good, sound businesses over markets or trends.
So what makes an attractive business? Here are some of the fundamentals he looks for:

  • Utilities: Is the company used or consumed on a daily basis
  • Moats: Does the company have a defensible, competitive advantage?
  • High Barriers to Entry: Is the industry difficult to enter and hard to displace the position of the company? Or will a new technology disrupt the entire market?
  • Cash Generating: Does the company have low (or virtually no) accounts receivable and inventories?
  • Pricing Power: Can the business raise prices without losing significant customers to its competition?
  • Lack of Superstars: If the business has to rely on superstars, then all the value is tied to them.

When you can accurately assess these elements, you get closer to a stock's "intrinsic value". This is the real, underlying value - isolated from Mr. Market's volatility - that Buffett learned from mentor Benjamin Graham.

3. Look for the undervalued investments

Finally, one of Buffet's greatest lessons is to avoid investing in the hottest trends, companies and paying inflated prices.

He once told FOX Business Network anchor Liz Claman:

Liz, you never want to buy the quarterback who just won the Superbowl. He's too expensive. You want to buy the guy in the hospital bed with his leg in a sling because you know he's cheaper and the odds are, he'll get better and blossom.

A lot of this comes down to going against the current commotion in the public financial market, if it makes sense. And it's one of the reasons he passed over the social media giant Facebook's IPO.

He has another oft-quoted phrase that says, "Be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful".

Buffett has no problem making these tough decisions because he's concerned with the businesses intrinsic value, not the stock price. And he proves that if you want uncommon results, then you need to stop following common advice.

Natural? Organic? Are we at the local Farmer's Market?

The writing lingo these days can be incredibly confusing for Expert Authors. Long gone are the days when authors simply published in print without having to concern themselves with things like search engine optimization, link building, and natural links.

Link building can play a role in amplifying your exposure, which in turn brings your audience to you and builds your brand. While there are several practices floating about the web-o-sphere, there is one strategy that should be your end-all, be-all guide to link building:

Create a natural link by writing a quality, original article with a quality, relevant link in the Resource Box. Then publish the article on a well-known website.

This strategy has been the best, if not the only strategy, of hundreds of successful Expert Authors. Why? It's 100% organic, reinforces your rank, and increases your exposure.

How do you determine whether your link is relevant to your article?

Relevance is the relation of something to the matter at hand, i.e., the relation of a link to an article.

For example, imagine you're an expert on swimming pools. You would like to drive traffic to your swimming pools website to increase your brand and sell a few pool products. You also manage a soccer blog (go Man U!) that has a running commentary on the latest soccer news and insights, which you'd like to drive more traffic to because you'd like to be taken more seriously as an authority on soccer. You've written an article on swimming pool maintenance and are considering which of your websites provides the best natural link scenario with the article:

Topic: Swimming Pool Maintenance ...

  • Soccer Link? Not relevant. Not only is it a poor user experience to link a reader to something irrelevant to the topic they originally searched for, it doesn't help you improve your rank. To increase exposure and drive more traffic to your soccer authority site, write an article relevant to soccer and then include your soccer link in the Resource Box!
     
  • Best of Both Worlds? Linking both your pool site and your soccer link is only going to split your traffic. One half of your audience will go to your irrelevant soccer link (see previous point) and the other will go to your pool site.
     
  • Pool Link? YES. Not only will this extraordinary level of relevance help promote your credibility as an authority in the swimming pool niche, it will help increase your rank.

Now that we've straightened out which link you should use, if you want to amplify your brand exposure and increase your authority even more, build your reader's trust by establishing your presence on your link. Think about it for a moment. You're a reader and you know nothing about whether the author of an article you've just read is legit. You click-through to their website and the author is nowhere to be found. Suspicious, right? Make sure your association with the website is transparent; ensure your Author Name appears on the website (e.g., "About" sections, articles, etc.) and establish your presence.

Use this link building technique to not only increase your rank, but to increase your brand exposure and your credibility! When in doubt: Always aim for originality, quality, relevance, and transparency - you will never go wrong.
